IFFO Fishmeal, Fish Oil Outlook 2005-2006

Although the current fishing conditions in Peru may give the impression of a fishmeal buildup, the fundamentals of both fishmeal and fish oil markets will continue to be driven by relatively short supply. This year's fishmeal market was dominated by demand from China, where fishmeal consumption is expected to reach record high levels. Faced with a very demanding market in 2005, International Fish-meal and Fish Oil Organisation (IFFO) producers expressed their commitment to meet customers' expectations during their mid-November Commercial Committee Meeting in Shanghai, China. Although effected by high commodity prices - particularly for petroleum, a major cost for both the fishing and seafood-processing segments - they kept the market reasonably stable in a rather firm environment.
