摘要

Aquaculture may deliver commerical quantities of tiny sea creatures that provide important anticancer compounds. Evaluation of a production system for Bugula neritina found that sufficient bryostatin 1 could be extracted from the biomass on 200 in-seastructures to treat all the leukemia patients in the United States. Material from cultured ecteinascidin 743 could be used to treat soft tissue sarcomas. The lack of large-scale, renewable supplies of secondary metabolites derived from marine invertebrates has limited the development of new drugs from marine natural products. However, aquaculture could play a role in delivering such supplies on a commercial scale.
