In the international aquaculture trade, producers have lots of information on how their fish or shrimp were produced, but buyers may know little about a product's safety, origins or environmental and social impacts. Certification programs provide a means to fill this information gap. Third-party verification of food safety and environmental credentials adds value by signaling high standards to potential buyers. Certification is also closely linked to the processes of building trust and branding.
