In intensive rearing of marine fish larvae, disinfection and fluctuating concentrations of organic matter can destabilize the microbial community, favoring the proliferation of potentially harmful microbes. Recirculating aquaculture systems have properties that can mature and stabilize the microbial community, creating a more benign bacterial flora in larval tanks. The integration of membrane filtration may reduce the accumulation of fine solids and could be used to optimize nitrification.
