THE U.S. Department of Agriculture is taking nominations for a new funding program aimed at recruiting needed veterinarians for states or territories that lack food animal veterinarians by helping the vets repay student loans. USDA will accept nominations through Feb. 27 to areas that will become eligible for funding under the Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program. First, the state veterinarian must know about the need or shortage in a livestock production area. USDA is working through state animal health officials to choose shortage areas that will become eligible to recruit food animal veterinarians who will be eligible for the loan repayment program.
