The results of several trials in Ecuador and Thailand showed that the supplementation of feed with a well-balanced mixture of nucleotides can improve growth and survival throughout the production of shrimp and tilapia. The supplementation also helpedimprove the effectiveness of vaccinations against the bacterium Aeromonas hydrophila in tilapia. Immunity - the capacity of organisms to resist infections - is an important health management consideration for the commercial aquacul-ture industry becauseof the variety of bacterial and viral diseases that affect cultured species. Immunostim-ulation of farmed aquatic species is often done using various commercially available compounds, including glucans and nucleotides, which are incorporated as additives into formulated feeds.
