Anticoccidials: Past to present to future

COCCIDIA are a widely distributed group of protozoan parasites. The coccidia of chickens consist of seven recognized species: Eimeria acervulina, Eimeria brunetti, Eimeria maxima, Eimeria mitis, Eimeria necatrix, Eimeria praecox and Eimeria tenella. The original descriptions, or redescriptions, of all but one of these species were provided more than 80 years ago as the result of exhaustive and detailed studies conducted by Dr. E.E. Tyzzer at Harvard Medical School (Tyzzer, 1929; Tyzzer, et al., 1932). Remarkably, Tyzzer completely described all of the valid species of coccidia of the chicken except one, E. brunetti, which was described in 1942 by P.P. Levine (Levine, 1942).
