Italian experiment in using ISO 14001 to promote sustainable development in protected areas

How does one apply an ISO 14001-based EMS to a protected area of great natural beauty, and involve all who live, work and visit such national and regional parks in promoting sustainable development? Lucia Naviglio, consultant to ENEA, Italy's National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and the Environment, describes an experimental project in two national parks. UNI, the Italian national standards institute, has recently published a series of handbooks providing practical guidelines on the implementation of ISO 9000 and ISO 14000. Two of these guidelines focus on ISO 14000 implementation in natural protected areas and by hotels, and a third for local authorities is on the way. All are intended to guide readers by practical examples of how to apply the standards in specific contexts or complex situations.
