ATEAM of poultry scientists has concluded that beak trimming benefits the performance and welfare of layers, findings that will challenge those who are seeking a ban on the practice. This would be applicable to the U.K., where a ban was scheduled to become effective this year but was delayed last year on the advice of the U.K. Farm Animal Welfare Council (FAWC). However, authorities said at the time they acted on the FAWC recommendation, they were still planning to implement the ban, although probably not until 2016. The team's conclusion was based on research at the University of Saskatchewan led by Dr. Henry Classen, a professor in the department of animal and poultry science.
