USDA revamps school food rules

THE National School Lunch Program and other U.S. Department of Agriculture nutrition programs will soon buy food under tight food safety standards -- particularly for ground beef -- as the result of a USDA review Agriculture Secretary Tom Vil-sack announced Feb. 4. The initiatives result from a review of current standards by USDA agencies: the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Food Safety & Inspection Service (FSIS), Farm Service Agency (FSA) and Food & Nutrition Service (FNS). As part of this, AMS has asked the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) to review its ground beef purchasing program.
