The future of management system standards

Management system standards are important because they guide alignment and ensure conformity of policy deployment What will be the role of management system standards as we move into the 21st century? Are they outmoded? Will they aid or hinder organizational development and ability to compete? Are standards important for all sizes of organization - from multinationals to small and medium-sized businesses, and for businesses in the developing countries as well as the developed world? I approach these questions as someone with almost 30 years' experience in industry, taking on the added responsibility of chairing an international standards committee.
