Loading the farm ute with fencing equipment and materials in preparation for a day of building or repairing fences soon could become a thing of the past. CSIRO researchers have developed a prototype virtual fence — one that will allow farmers to 'construct' and 'move' fences using a mouse and computer screen from the comfort of their farm office, without the need for physical, fixed fences. It is a development that eventually will save farmers thousands of dollars in capital and labour costs. The development of a virtual fence by CSIRO researchers, through the Food Futures Flagship, will revolutionise the way graziers manage livestock and produce important benefits such as substantial savings in capital and labour costs and more efficient pasture use.
