With mulesing to be phased out by 2010, the race is on to find suitable alternatives that reduce the risk of flystrike while adhering to the welfare needs of sheep. This article details the history of mulesing and CSIRO research efforts to produce aneffective alternative. Genetic approaches such as breeding for a bare breech and resistance to blowfly maggots are likely to provide the best solution to flystrike.
