Canola yield defies heavy grazing

Heavy grazing with crossbred ewes for a month in winter did nothing to dampen the yield of the Molineux family's Hybrid Clearfield Y83 canola in 2011. Despite a relatively dry spring, the 133ha crop still yielded an average of 2.3 tonnes per hectare with a 44 per cent oil content. It also played a valuable role in filling the winter feed gap for the Molineux's prime lamb production enterprise. The Molineux's crop just over half of their property each year with winter cereals, and run about 2000 Dohne-cross ewes on the balance.
