IN a Supreme Court ruling issued May 13 in the Bowman vs. Monsanto case, the court unanimously voted 9-0 for the protection of intellectual property regarding the sale and usage of self-replicating products such as Monsanto's genetically modified Roundup Ready soybeans. The case centered on whether a farmer who buys patented seeds may reproduce them through planting and harvesting without the patent holder's permission. The court decided that the farmer may not.
