ISO's 'global relevance'-or how to cause an explosion of interest

The months of June and July 2004 saw ISO receive massive news coverage and Web exposure. This was related to two different events that nevertheless underlined an essential characteristic of ISO's standardization work: "global relevance ". Following a recap of the events, ISO Management Systems interviews ISO Secretary-General Alan Bryden for his reactions to them and on the meaning and significance of the concept. An example each of current and future ISO work detonated interest in the media, particularly on the Web. The publication on 15 June 2004 of ISO/IEC 19752:2004, Information technology -Method for the determination of toner cartridge yield for monochromatic electrophotographic printers and multi-function devices that may contain printer components, was heralded a day later by a joint press release extolling the virtues of the new ISO/IEC standard by four internationally known brand names in information, business and home technologies.
