Buying and selling second-hand machinery and equipment can be fraught with danger. This article outlines how providing a safety report ensures buyers can feel confident about the safe condition of equipment or are aware of the safety risks. Detaileddocumentation is the key to lowering the liability risk when selling second-hand equipment. Farm plant and machinery that is sold needs to be safe, suitable for the required work and maintained in a safe condition. Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation does not distinguish between new and used or second-hand plant. Nor does it distinguish between a supplier who is a machinery dealer and a farmer who sells privately or at an auction clearance sale.
