As well as posing environmental and public health problems, pesticide residues threaten the markets of many of Australia's agricultural commodities. But technological advances made during recent years have helped researchers develop a new approach tothe disposal of pesticide residues. Australian farmers soon could have ready access to a range of products that provide a more efficient, effective and environmentally friendly means of cleaning up pesticide residues. Farmers are under increasing pressure to become more efficient and to improve the quality of their products. One result of this is an increasing reliance on pesticides to control insect, plant and fungal pests — global pesticide sales reached about US 33 billion dollar during 2004.
