Novel pelleting solutions for probiotics and yeasts

The upcoming total ban on the use of antimicrobial growth promoters in feed has created a whole new plethora of substitutes, each with its unique properties. Incorporation of these live products in pelleted feed, however, is a different story. Many ofthem are heat sensitive and therefore require novel approaches in application. Yeasts and bacteria (probiotics) are produced through a process called fermentation. After selection of a strain for viability, reproductive capacity, metabolisable capacityand efficacy the microbes are multiplied in a culture medium - often a sugar - where temperature, acidity, aerobic or anaerobic conditions determine the success of multiplication. To do this at a large scale specific knowledge and expertise are required.
