Bad winter leads to bad gastroenteritis

THE unseasonably cool weather during the last year has certainly brought swine health challenges that producers throughout the Midwest have to tackle. An increased frequency of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus infections during thesummer of 2009 was attributed, in part, to cooler temperatures. A cool fall, in combination with excessive moisture, contested respiratory health within many herds throughout the Midwest region, and as this winter has progressed with brutally cold temperatures and surplus snowfall, it has become one of the worst seasons in recent history for transmissible gastroenteritis (TGE) in nursery and finishing herds.
