When chlorine is applied to water, it dissolves and speciation occurs based on pH. Application rates should be increased as pH rises. Since free chlorine residuals decompose to chloride and water under light, chlorination's residual action lasts onlya few hours or days in outdoor systems. Ponds should be fertilized a few days after chlorination to encourage the regrowth of natural food organisms before introducing postlarvae.
