Back in 2009 at the Asian Pacific Aquaculture Conference, GAA President George Chamberlain told the audience the aquaculture industry needed to adopt a strategy based around strong standards, thus eliminating doubts and misperceptions regarding sustainable practices, and then build a strong promotional campaign about seafood and health, as that was an area no other competing food source could ever match. This resonated with me, as I had seen the light on the connections of seafood and health since 2005, when I went to the Seafood & Health Conference held in Washington, D.C. It was an eye-opener on many fronts. Firstly, there were few "seafood" people there, with the majority of the audience medical researchers, government staff, representatives of non-governmental organizations and health specialists.
