Arapaima: Candidate For Intensive Freshwater Culture

Arapaimas offer appealing flesh color and texture, low fat content and high levels of protein and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Furthermore, the fish yield a range of by-products, and demand for juvenile arapaimas as ornamental fish is high. The large,fast-growing species tolerates a range of farming conditions without exhibiting cannibalism. Arapaimas show potential for production in intensive recirculating systems, but control over their reproductive cycle will be required to achieve year-round harvests.
