Led by salmon and blue mussel production, aquaculture's share of the European seafood market is rising. To meet demand, Spain and other E.U. countries are likely to continue importing large quantities of seafood. Also, European suppliers may tend to provide fresh products, while overseas sources predominantly provide frozen seafood. Europe is a net importer of seafood. Its fisheries are stagnant or in decline, and cannot be expected to re cover in the near future. This is one of the reasons the aquaculture sector has increased its share of European seafood production to 30%. In the coming years, expectations include a further growth in imports and also a clearer division of labor between the European seafood suppliers and overseas suppliers, wherethe former predominantly supply fresh products and the latter frozen products.
