CHICKENS in the eastern markets pushed a cent higher last week, establishing a new record high for the second straight week. Chickens were 97 cents to $1.00/lb. last Thursday, 21.0% higher than at this time last year. Pricing reflected almost full restoration of power on the East Coast following outages there due to Hurricane Sandy that kept people from stocking their refrigerators, as well as demand from fast-food restaurants for holiday shoppers and generally reduced supplies as chicken companies move to cut production to increase prices enough to cover feeding costs, according to Feedstuffs sources.
