The evaporation of water from aquaculture ponds is influenced by solar radiation, air and water temperature, and wind velocity. Turbidity caused by plankton blooms or suspended soil particles favors greater evaporation. Water salinity and seasonal changes also influence evaporation. Evaporation is typically measured with an evaporation pan, with values adjusted for the size of the pan. Not much can be done to reduce evaporation losses, although the control of aquatic plants can yield some reduction.
