Established in 1970 by the White House and the US Congress, the mission of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA - www.epa.gov) is to protect human health and the environment. The EPA's responsibilities include developing and enforcing environmental regulations, and environmental research and education. The EPA believes that if correctly implemented, an environmental management system (EMS), such as ISO 14001, constitutes a valuable tool to help organizations improve their environmental performance, reduce pollution, and improve compliance with regulations.
