New barley lines set to challenge world leaders

Until now, Canadian varieties have led the world in terms of malting varieties best suited to the Asian style of brewing but the arrival of Australian varieties Buloke, Fitzroy, Flagship and Vlamingh is expected to change that. Four barley varieties released across the country last year are set to establish a new quality benchmark for the Australian malting industry. According to Barley Australia executive officer Linda Price, the quality improvement offered by the new varieties — Buloke, Fitzroy, Flagship and Vlamingh — along with proximity to the Asian markets and reliability of supply put Australian growers on a par with their northern hemisphere competitors.
