Having a seasonal climate forecast tailored for a particular area can be much more valuable to a farmer than an accurate seasonal rainfall forecast. Although there are some seasonal forecasts that provide reasonable value, most farmers want a better forecast for their area — particularly farmers in southern Australia where the climate influences are more complicated and existing long-term forecasts have marginal accuracy. In southern Australia, a perfect rainfall forecast would achieve less than half the potential value of a forecast system for the grains industry.
