Green chop wins in quality stakes

Switching from grazing and ensiling forage sorghum crops to a system of green chop has helped one Victorian beef producer feed his herd with a consistent supply of high-quality, out-of-season feed. Since changing from silage to green chop, Nigel Paulet, Drumborg, Victoria, has seen feed values improve significantly with protein levels increasing from 5.8 per cent to 16.4% and metabolisable energy levels from 7.3 megajoules per kilogram of dry matter to 9.8 MJ/kg DM. The switch also has eliminated the double handling and storage losses.
