Western Australian oat growers could soon be growing dwarf milling oat varieties which yield more and are less likely to lodge and shed grain than their non-dwarf cousins. In Western Australia only non-dwarf oat varieties such as Mortlock, Carrolup and Pallinup are currently received into the milling grade, while the available dwarf oat varieties Wandering and Dalyup can be received only into the animal feed grade. Three new dwarf milling varieties — Kojonup, Possum and Mitika — were tested as part of a larger Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC)-supported project, in which the performance of new oat varieties for milling and oaten hay were assessed for WA conditions.
