AHA calls for sodium reduction

THE American Heart Assn. (AHA) has issued a call to action for the food industry, health professionals, policy-makers and the public to intensify efforts to reduce Americans' consumption of sodium. AHA recommended that Americans substantially reduce their sodium intake from an estimated 3,500 mg or more per day to 1,500 mg, noting that an analysis by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention determined that a majority of the American population either has high blood pressure or is at risk of developing it.
