Of the estimated 4,3 million United Kingdom business enterprises at the start of 2004,99,3percent had fewer than 49 employees (the British Government's definition of "small"). Only 0,6percent (26 000) were medium sized (50 to 249 employees), and a mere 0.1percent of the total (6 000) were large (with more than 249 employees.)
