Australia: Small business is big business

Commonly referred to as the nation's "engine room", the small to medium business sector accounts for close to 60percent of all employment and around 30percent of Australia's Gross Domestic Product. Contrary to common perception, most small businesses are successful. According to official Australian Bureau of Statistics data, around 36,5percent of them have been in operation with the current owner for 10 or more years, with another 19,8percent for at least five, but less than 10, years.
