Does the arrival of a variety with Group 1 milling quality and high yields mean Group 2 wheats can be abandoned this autumn? It's a key consideration for growers to consider after Gallant, to some surprise, was catapulted straight into the Group 1 bracket by nabim for the HGCA's Recommended List. With a UK-treated yield of 103% of the controls, only Panorama of the Group 2s at 104% beats it. The variety has come along at just the right time, according to Gary Sharkey, head of wheat procurement at Rank Hovis. "It has performed well, some millers have already bought forward and it would seem to be a variety for the farmer, too."
