The appeal of extruded feeds in aquaculture

Global demand for fish is increasing, wild catch is not. Aquaculture has to fill the gap, but needs feeds that are less dependent on raw materials originating from fish. To convert ingredients from vegetable origin to digestible ingredients for fish extrusion of the materials is the right solution. On a worldwide scale, fishing represents a constant 90 million tonnes of wild caught fish against 50 million tonnes produced by aquaculture. The latter production is growing at a rate of more than 8% per annum - well above the growth rate in livestock farming. As a result, almost half of the fish products eaten by man are derived from aquaculture (Figure 1). The growth of aquaculture, especially in terms of finfish and prawns, has resulted in an increased need for compound feedstuff's, estimated at 18 - 20 million tonnes.
