Thermal imaging technology is helping a Swedish dairy farmer spot potential mastitis infection before it reaches a clinical stage. Although at 200,000 cells/ml, the cell count level in Lars-Gunnar Samuelsson's 320-cow herd was not high, he was keen tokeep it low and installed a camera designed to pick up mastitis in the early stages. "We always get paid more for our milk because it falls into the low cell count band, but we were getting mastitis infections," he says. He has been using the cattle disease diagnostics (CaDDi) mastitis thermal imaging camera for six months and says it has detected seven cases of mastitis in the early stages.
