In the treatment of gastrointestinal tumors, simultaneous radio chemotherapy plays an important role. It is one of the principles of simultaneous radiochemotherapy, applying only chemotherapeutic agents simultaneously to radiation, which are primarily effective in the treated tumor entity, therefore a lot of different agents, like antimetabolites, mostly 5-fluorouracil, platinum derivates (mostly cisplatinum and oxaliplatin), mitomycin C and taxanes are used in simultaneous radiochemotherapy. Most of these have also radiation-intensifying effects. The mechanisms and interactions with ionizing radiation are presented in the article. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
