Last campaign's sugar beet crop reached a record average yield of 75.6t/ha, beating the previous best of 71.7t/ha set in 2009. That's a very fitting start to the company's centenary celebrations, points out Robin Limb, British Sugar's agricultural development manager, who notes that the progress made over that time is testament to the work of plant breeders, growers and agronomists, as well as all the companies involved in developing technical advances. "We've all come a long way since the first factory at Cantley was opened in 1912. As well as improvements in growing the crop, there have been processing efficiency and sustainability gains, too."
