When Banks Cargill Agriculture merged with Allied Grain in 2005 to form Frontier, some in agriculture saw it as inevitable consolidation within a shrinking industry. Its critics feared the only outcome was one less buyer for arable farmers' grain - and that meant farmers just had to take the price offered by the remaining few. Few saw the move in the same way as the man behind it, Mark Aitchison is proud of the business he has put together - and believes Frontier can be a flagship for the UK arable industry - a fully integrated, multi-enterprise business with one of the strongest balance sheets around.
