Resistance to anthelmintics may soon become a thing of the past if a new class of wormer - initially being developed for sheep - receives the go-ahead. But even though many farmers are facing problems with worms resistant to anthelmintics - and already one flock in the UK has been identified as resistant to all anthelmintics - it may be five years before the new drug is available. Animal health company Novartis, which has developed the new worm treatment based on the discovery of amino-acetonitrile derivatives (AADs), says although resistance to anthelmintics in sheep is now a global problem, beef cattle are also rapidly developing resistance.
