Six new barleys joined the Lists, including a conventional that closely matches performance of the hybrids. Abig step up in yield. That's the verdict on the two new winter barley varieties, SY Venture and Archer, joining the malting category on the Recommended List. And the latest conventional six-row feed variety, KWS Meridian, shows that yield performance can get close to that of the hybrids, says Peter Hanson of the HGCA Recommended List team. SY Venture from Syngenta and Archer from Limagrain are both two-row malting types, he explains, with a good yield advantage and better straw characteristics than Winsome. Both also offer resistance to barley mosaic virus.
