Learning the lessons from an early harvest

While many farms in northern England struggled to finish a rain-affected harvest, Peter Chapman was glad to have got nearly all his winter wheat cut by the end of August at Thornton Grange. Most grain was brought in at 14-18% moisture, with any load above 14% dried on site, using a 30-year-old Allmet drier. Mr Chapman has tried to hedge his bets when it comes to the marketing by forward-selling 180t into a November grain pool, leaving a couple of hundred tonnes in store still to be sold.
