Move to web for VAT returns may increase costs

Rural businesses face higher costs because of the government's insistence on VAT returns and other documents being filed online. The mandatory requirement for all VAT tax returns to be submitted online from 1 April this year is causing growing frustration because of unreliable internet connections and the lack of broadband in rural communities. An increasing number of PAYE forms must also be submitted online from this year. About 20% of businesses in rural areas cannot get broadband and many of thesehave no internet access at all.
