Wizard continues to dominate winter bean plantings, accounting for 90% of the UK crop in 2009. Steven Belcher, technical officer at PGRO, says there are five winter varieties in trials, but no new introductions are expected for later this year. "Withits pale hilum, Wizard is the variety which meets the needs of the export market and so gives the opportunity for growers to earn a premium," he says. Sultan, another pale hilum type, is now provisionally recommended and offers higher yields than Wizard.
