Another difficult year for the UK economy seems likely. Fortunately agriculture is somewhat divorced from the wider economy, though is by no means immune. Both consumer and government spending remain weak as these sectors of the economy grapple with debt hangovers, says Richard King, partner and head of research at Andersons. "Poor domestic demand has been compounded by weak export markets - notably the eurozone." Rather than invest, firms have hoarded cash to protect themselves against economic uncertainty, says Mr King.
