There are 13 candidate winter wheat varieties, but it's the possible Group 3s which are showing real improvements over current choices, experts agree. NIAB's Clare Leaman believes all three newcomers in this sector Viscount, Cassius and Scout - will attract interest. "We're desperate for new varieties in this category. There's nervousness about growing Robigus now and it's time to see some improvements." Independent variety consultant Richard Fenwick agrees. All of the present Group 3 varieties havea weakness, either on yield or disease, but the three candidates are competitive on yield, he says. "They've performed better than Robigus in trials. Although Viscount looks the best of the bunch, there's room for the other two as well."
