Tackling fertility problems in cows and bulls can lead to more efficient calving and better returns In output terms, the target number of calves produced per mated female should ideally be more than 95 out of 100. A recent EBLEX survey of UK suckler fertility revealed that the figure is nearer 92%. Of these, the number that survive to weaning falls further to about 85%. Participants in the survey were likely to be among the better performing herds, so performance nationally may be even worse.
