When all AGP's are banned by the EU in 2006, many other countries are expected to follow. This will take away one weapon from the feed formulators to fight microbial imbalances in young animals. However, more strategies are being evaluated and in this new light animal productivity should not be compromised. Acidifiers will form a solid basis in these strategies. With the increased pressure of the EU ban on anti-microbial growth promoters (AGP's), much data has been gathered about potential alternatives. The most prominent of these is acidifiers, but others are also interesting. Acidifiers are already used extensively, also in feeds containing AGP's, because they can provide an additional effect. Acidifiers work through different mechanisms. In combination with other additives and feeding strategies they could help to overcome microbial imbalances.
