New role of 'marks of conformity' in the global market

Marks on products can convey useful information about a product, so that such information should be clearly understood by consumers and be used for better-informed purchasing decisions. This principle has been upheld by the CASCO Working Group 12, Use of marks of conformity assessment, since it relaunched its activities in September 2000 after two years of dormancy. As its main task, the renewed WG 12 is developing an International Standard, which can be uniformly applied to the use of marks that indicate conformity of a product with a standard, published specification or code of practice. Such marks are generally called "marks of conformity" and are established as a result of some form conformity assessment activity. This activity is carried out in accordance with other relevant standards, such as ISO/IEC Standards and Guides.
